What do a wedding cake from 1889, Elvis Gratton’s stage costume and a sweater made of hair have in common? They are all in the Musée’s collections. Why and—more importantly—how did they get here, alongside historically significant objects like Champlain’s travelogues and Louis-Joseph Papineau’s frock coat.

This spring, take a virtual journey through a place few have seen up until now: the Musée’s storage rooms!
Discover a truly unusual selection of objects, learn their stories and, in some cases, unveil the secrets they hide.

You’ll also be able to observe the meticulous daily work of our conservators, the true guardians of this vast collective heritage.

Don’t miss out on this one-of-a-kind experience!

Stored mainly at the Centre national de conservation et d’étude des collections, the Musée’s collection consists of over 233,000 objects depicting the evolution of societies and of Québec’s inhabitants.

The Musée is also responsible for preserving and promoting the Séminaire de Québec’s incomparable collections. These historical archives consist of a library of rare and antiquarian books and works of art – a number of which are listed in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register. They also include the second largest collection of scientific objects in North America, after that of Harvard University.

The Musée’s collections, and their unimaginable diversity and scope, are truly a hidden treasure.

Curating Memories is a digital installation designed by the Musée de la civilisation with financial support from the ministère de la Culture et des Communications.
