Retrace the history of Québec’s hip-hop culture, understand its many dimensions and discover its role in our society.

Hip-hop first made an appearance in Québec at the end of the ’70s. Considered as a marginal culture for a long time, it now has an important role in Québec’s society.

The hip-hop culture was, and still is, considered a symbol of a rich and diverse culture. It helps to raise awareness about social issues and inspires important cultural changes. The emergence of hip-hop culture is a testimony of the struggles and hardships endured for all of Québec’s voices to be heard, but also of the journey that remains.

An exhibition made with hip-hop artist and independent historian Webster.

When you enter the exhibition room, after having received the headphones, a first warning sets the tone. Hip-hop is a very authentic art form, but it can be blunt. Beware!

The Parental Advisory label first appeared in 1990 in the United States on some hip-hop CDs and tapes. This label was designed to warn parents that the musical products that their children listen to contain lyrics of a sexual or violent nature that may be shocking. The logo appeared during the Reagan era and could be found on hip-hop albums, among other things. In Québec, rappers used it as a way to prove the quality and the authenticity of their work.

Listen up and let yourself be carried away by the sound of rap queb! With your headphones, you will be guided through the 3 dimensions immersive sound tour that is geolocated and where music, voices, testimonies, archives and history all coexist.

Throughout the tour, no matter which way you take, this moving universe will evolve as you go, depending on your location and the content that will draw you in. An innovative device that distinguishes itself from the traditional audioguide experience.
